A range of impact assessments have been undertaken to address all relevant environmental and social aspects across the project. The purpose of the assessments is to ensure that all potential environmental, cultural and socio-economic impacts associated with the construction and operation of the pipelines are identified and assessed, and to develop measures to avoid and mitigate such impacts throughout the project. In combination, these assessments form the Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) for the project.
The assessments developed for the project comprise mandatory regulatory assessments, which include national Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in each country through which the pipeline will pass – Russia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany. International requirements under the Espoo Convention also apply.
The company also performed topic-specific supplemental assessments developed to meet additional requirements under international finance institution standards.
The Environmental and Social assessments have also included transparent and open dialogue with all stakeholders in the project. The approach to stakeholder engagement is described on the other topic pages of this portal as well.
